coveroctober28-iur58zduAnd for those of you who want to read more about the perils of being a powerful woman in politics, check out this beautifully written article by Elaine Showalter from the Times Literary Supplement.

P.S. Apologies for the preoccupation with political events. We will (hopefully) get over it after November 8th and get back to our usual Relationship Rhythm selves.

  1. We are being political, but this is a valuable consideration.

    David Keith Blogerationist:

Re “A Scandal Too Far, Maybe, for Clinton Aide” (news analysis, Oct. 30):

Why must a powerful woman pay a price for her husband’s transgressions? This article suggests that Huma Abedin may have become a political liability for Hillary Clinton, not because of anything Ms. Abedin has done but because she had the misfortune of marrying Anthony Weiner. Why is it a surprise that Hillary Clinton is standing by Ms. Abedin when Ms. Abedin’s husband’s improprieties are at issue?

This election cycle has already laid bare gender double standards around infidelity and abuse. A woman is betrayed by her husband in the public spotlight. Somehow that becomes a mark against her. A man betrays his wife in the public spotlight and faces multiple accusations of sexual assault. Somehow he remains a major candidate for president of the United States.

Time and again, the fog of “scandal” threatens to engulf both husband and wife when only the former bears responsibility. We must stop blaming women for their husbands’ mistakes.
